The London Borough of Havering is situated in east London and forms part of Outer London. The main town is Romford and other important settlements are Hornchurch and Upminster. The Borough was created in 1965 by the combined former area of the Municipal Borough of Romford and Hornchuch Urban District. The name Havering was found in documents from around the 12th century. The origins of this name in the Middle ages was linked to the legend of Edward the Confessor and a mystical ring returned to him by Saint John the Apostole.

A Recycling Collection Trial started operating in 25,000 households. Because of the successful results it is going to be extended to more areas across the Borough.
