So if you want to enjoy a vintage-looking wooden floor in your home or office, here is how the look can be achieved. You can either attempt a DIY project or completely change the appearance of your existing wooden floor, making it look vintage and charming. However, make sure you have the required knowledge and experience to achieve the look without destroying the floor, and all the needed professional equipment too. In case you are not confident and experienced enough to undertake such a project, make sure to contact your flooring specialist and they will provide you with the exact results you want to achieve.

Creating a distressed and vintage look for a wooden floor is not that much of a complex concept. However, it still requires a level of knowledge and experience, as well as specific equipment, tools, and products. Here is a step-by-step guide to creating a vintage wooden floor.

    Select Wooden Flooring

    Vingate wooden flooring look

First things first, you want to start with choosing a wooden floor if one is not already installed in your home or office. However, if you are starting from scratch, you have all the freedom to choose a type of wooden floor that will get the distressed look more easily. Wood species such as pine and oak and even some alternative options such as bamboo distress more easily and deeply than others. They would be a good option for those of you, who want to achieve a vintage look in its full potential and intensity. However, if you are going for a more subtle intensity of the distressed effect, make sure to choose some more exotic wood species that have a denser and stronger structure or go for maple from the domestic woods.

    Acclimation of the Wooden Floor

One of the most important things that have to be done at the beginning of every wood floor installation project is letting the wooden floorboards acclimate to the new place. Wood, being a natural product, has a response and reacts to its environment. When there are changes in the wood’s environment when the wooden floorboards leave the manufacturing facilities and are transported to the place of installation, wood will need some time to “get used to” the new environment. This is important because every home or office has its specific levels of humidity, temperature, and even indoor moisture. Give the flooring materials some time by unwrapping the package and leaving them at the place of installation for at least a couple of days. This will prevent some potential installation and stability issues.

Install According to the Manufacturer’s Instructions

This step is pretty self-explanatory. Once the wooden floorboards are acclimated to their new environment, they can be installed. There are many installation methods, it all depends on the specifics of the space, subfloor, flooring materials, and type of floor. Wood floor installation is usually recommended to be done by experienced professionals to prevent potential issues and problems. However, if you have experience in wood floor installation and you have the knowledge and equipment required to do a good job, make sure to continue with this step on your own.

    The Distressing Technique

To get that charming and beautiful vintage look, the wooden floorboards should be treated with a specific distressing technique. Several techniques will help you achieve a vintage look for your floor. While some of them are performed in the factory and require a very specific environment and equipment, others can be performed on-site, once the floor is already installed. You want to have a clear idea of the look you want to achieve and the right technique that will allow you to achieve this look. Remember, once the technique is performed, it is impossible to remove the results and start all over again, even sanding won’t help to get rid of the results.

    Tools Required for Distressing Techniques

As we have already mentioned, several techniques will give your floor a distressed, vintage look. You can choose the one for you by carefully considering the type of floor, the wood species and how well or poorly they will get the look, the intensity of the look you are going for, the final result you expect, etc. The tools that will help you achieve a distressed, vintage look include:

    • Wire brushes
    • Hand scrapers and sanders
    • Hammers, mallets, screwdrivers
    • Metal meat tenderizers
    • Saw blades
    • Soldering irons for burn marks and scars
    • Pellet guns
    • Cloth bag filled with bolts and rocks
    • Even high-heeled shoes can help
    • Metal chain links
    • Nail heads, bolts and screws you can embed

The Process of Achieving the Vintage Appearance

    Wooden flooring look 1

Well, the list above may seem like a kit for a serial killer. If you are not sure what you are doing and you are just checking your creativity on the floor, make sure to stop the DIY part of the project to this point and call your local flooring specialist for further help. It is easy to turn this project into torture for your floor and damage it to a point beyond repair. You don’t want to do so because wooden floors are expensive. What a wood flooring specialist will do to achieve the vintage, worn and weathered look, or what you can do if you decide to follow up with the project is always pay attention that you are working with the grain.

Working against the grain hides some serious risks of damaging the integrity of the floorboards and the entire structure of the floor beyond repair. Depending on your tool of choice, you can vary the angle of the tool to create an interesting pattern that looks authentic, however, never go against the grain of the wood. From now on, it is all up to you and your creativity. You can use just one tool of the above-mentioned or a number, then continue to stomp, grind, scratch, leave burn marks, and beat the floorboards until you achieve the desired look. Don’t go overboard, this will end up with an appearance that does not look authentic at all and you can easily damage the floorboards. Remember, natural foot traffic will later intensify the look and wear the floorboards even further off.

Make Sure Floorboards Stay in Service Condition

While distressing the floorboards, make sure to avoid excessive moisture. You are working with bare wood, which means that there is a higher risk of moisture soaking into the floorboards and damaging them. Bare wood will rapidly absorb any excess moisture and this will lead to major issues later on. The floor should be thoroughly dried out before you continue with the project.

    Prepare the Floor for Staining

The preparation process includes a thorough vacuuming of the floor’s surface. Any burrs and splinters that are a result of the distressing process should be lightly sanded or scraped down by hand.

    Get Creative with Staining

Now is your time to get even more creative and highlight the characteristics of the look you have achieved. Naturally, the wood floor stain will already highlight all areas with marks, scratches, knots, etc. However, if you want to make them even more visible and stand out, you can further highlight knots and marks by hand by adding a darker stain, wood filler, or even resin or ink. Alternatively, you can choose to use several shades of wood floor stain to achieve an even more vintage, weathered and unique look. Apply several shades of wood floor stain and always make sure to scrape between each layer of stain to give the floor a very distinct, unique look. The process of staining will take some time as you have to allow each layer to settle into the pattern of marks, scratches and textures you have created.

    Finish the Wooden Floor

The final step requires you to apply layers of a clear protective finish on the surface of the floor. You can choose from the whole spectrum of high gloss to matt and everything in between, it depends on your preferences. You can also choose between a variety of finishes. However, oil finishes are often the common choice for vintage floors, because oil sinks into the wood’s structure and ensures protection from within, not just on the surface, while still allowing the texture of the wood and everything you have created to stand out. Remember that despite the worn and vintage look, distressed wood flooring needs the same amount of maintenance and protection as any other type of real wood flooring. Maintain your floor accurately and regularly to enjoy it for many decades.
