Guide to Abrasives Types

Guide to abrasives types of flooring accessories. Bona abrasives come in a number of different grain types with different backings:

  • Aluminum oxide – a standard sand paper that becomes steadily worn down as it is used. It has an even rate of wear
  • Silicon carbide – a harder and sharper sanding paper grain than aluminum oxide, therefore it cuts better. Retains its abrasive effect until the grains are fully worn down
  • 100% zirconia – this is top-of-the-range abrasive for use on really tough hardwoods or for people who want a much longer-lasting abrasive. Though more expensive, zirconia sanding papers last up to five times longer than one of our conventional aluminum oxide abrasives.

Special 8300 mix including zirconia

Zirconia abrasives were originally developed for sanding metalworking, because of their extreme hardness. Then some wood flooring contractors began to use them for sanding wood because of their high efficiency and long life. However, 100% zirconia abrasives are not ideal for wood sanding. The coarse sanding leaves a rough surface that may need extra sanding work later to remove scratches. That is why we have developed an innovative combination of grain types – a completely new type of abrasive that gives you the best characteristics of two types of grain. We have mixed zirconia with another material to give a smoother result on wood. You still have the strength and long-lasting life of zirconia, but without deep scratches.
